The Jesus of the Old Testament: Seminary on Saturday at Tenth

by Rev. Timothy Brindle September 30

Three-fourths of our Bible is the Old Testament (OT), and according to our Lord Jesus Christ, it is primarily about him and his death and resurrection. “In the scroll of the book, it is written about me” (Psalm 40:7; Hebrews 10:7). Jesus goes so far as to say that each of the sections of the Old Testament foretell his person and work: “Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44). No wonder the New Testament writers primarily use Old Testament terminology to depict Jesus as the Lamb of God, our Eternal High Priest, the Son of David, the Messiah, and the I AM!

In order for us to have a clearer sight of the glory of Christ, four professors from Westminster Theological Seminary will highlight “The Jesus of the Old Testament”:

First, Dr. Jonny Gibson will show us Christ in the Covenants of Scripture: “‘In God’s sight there are two men—Adam and Jesus Christ—and these two men have all other men hanging from their girdle strings.’ Come and find out what Thomas Goodwin meant as we look at the covenant of works with Adam and the covenant of grace with Christ as the two great structural pillars of the Bible.”

Then, Dr. Vern Poythress will show us Christ in the Law of Scripture: “In the law of Moses, Christ is represented to his people and is present for his people through types, symbols crafted by God to display beforehand the meaning of Christ and his work.”

Dr. Stephen Coleman will show us Christ in the Wisdom of Scripture: “Though often dismissed as simplistic or idealistic, Proverbs actually conveys deep wisdom rooted in God’s creation order, shaping both individuals and communities toward life, righteousness, and flourishing. Ultimately, Proverbs points to Christ as the true and ultimate wisdom of God, whose life of perfect wisdom and obedience are imputed to believers for their salvation.

Lastly, Dr. Iain Duguid will show us Christ in the Prophets of Scripture: “The Lord promised Moses that he would raise up a prophet like him to be the ultimate communicator of his word to his people (Deuteronomy 18:15-22): the New Testament shows us that Jesus is this promised ‘prophet like Moses’, the one who embodies the true Israel like the OT prophets before him. As the writer to the Hebrews tells us, ‘In the past, the Lord spoke to us through Moses (and the prophets who carried on the work of Moses) but in these last days he has now spoken to us definitively through the Son.’”
