June Summer Choir

By / los domingos a las 10:30

June Summer Choir provides a wonderful introduction to choral singing and to the Tenth Church Choir, many of whose members participate in the choir.

All are welcome to participate in the June Summer Choir without prior choral or singing experience. Music learned in rehearsals is sung in that week's Sunday evening worship service. The choir has flexible participation and does not require a month-long commitment: anyone interested may sing one or more weeks throughout the month, simply by arriving in time for the rehearsal.

How many Psalms in the Bible are Messianic in nature? (Ordination exam question for our Presbytery.)  Answer:150. All invite us to see Jesus in the songs he himself used in worship. Using the Bible study on the Psalms by Winifred Brisley and Sharonda Cooper, TURN YOUR EYES, we will be studying 15 of these Psalms, as we observe, interpret, apply, and meditate on each major type of Psalm: wisdom, thanksgiving, lament, kingship, trust, and praise.  Please contact Earline at [email protected] if you would like to join.  She can also give you information on procuring the study book. (Teams link provided for virtual attendees).

Westminster Confession of Faith

By / los domingos a las 09

In this quarter, we will complete our studies of the Westminster Confession of Faith. When the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America was formed in 1788, it adopted (with minor revisions) the Westminster Confession of Faith (1646), Larger and Shorter Catechisms (1647), as its secondary standards (the Bible itself being the only infallible rule of faith and practice). Officers in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) have taken a vow to “sincerely receive and adopt” these confessional documents “as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures”. Members are encouraged to bring their own copy of the Confession to follow the teaching and the analysis. Members are also encouraged to read G.I. Williamson’s, The Westminster Confession of Faith for Study Classes.

**This class is offered virtually via Zoom along with in-person.

Children & Youth Bible School

By / los domingos a las 09

Teaching God’s Word to the Next Generation

Tenth’s Bible School for children and youth is a vital part of our ministry to the next generation. Bible School is held Sundays at 9 AM (with limited offerings at 11 AM) and 6:30 PM, providing something for every young person from the ages of 2 months to 18 years. Classes are divided by age or grade and are taught by competent and dedicated members from our congregation.

Children’s Bible School focuses on teaching children the truth of God’s Word to prepare them for ministry and personal witness in future years. In the early years lessons begin with an overview of both the Old and New Testaments, followed by more detailed stories, theology, and practical living applications in the later years. Lessons are accompanied by a robust memory work program including both scripture and catechism. For older students, we conduct an essay contest each year that gives them an opportunity to debate and explain a point of doctrine from the Westminster Confession of Faith.

Scripture Memory Program

Tenth’s Memory Work Program has been a feature of our Children’s Sunday School for more than 60 years. We understand that Bible memorization is a tool for making God’s word known to our covenant children. We hope and pray it helps them, “to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

Because it is much easier to absorb and retain the verses in youth than in later years, our Memory Work Program applies several basic principles:

  • Mastery of whole Bible passages and chapters
The best approach to Bible memorization is for a child to learn longer and related passages of scripture over time so that the contextual meaning of each passage becomes apparent. This is more fruitful than memorizing dozens of important but unrelated verses which may be easily forgotten.
  • Sequential scope
We gradually increase the length of passages over the course of the program. First graders, for example, begin to memorize Exodus 20. After they complete the passage in the later elementary years, they review the entire chapter. In the same way, children progressively memorize Romans 8. In the early years, they learn parts of a verse; then the entire verse; and finally, neighboring verses until the entire chapter is learned.
  • Developmentally appropriate, progressively accelerated pace
Children’s ability to memorize increases with age. We aim to match the pace of memorization with their developmental ability. Our youngest children move slowly through verses and passages. We pick up the pace as children enter the elementary years while at the same time reviewing many of the earlier memorized passages.

Tenth Youth Orchestra

By / los domingos a las 17

Be part of a unique orchestra program!

Tenth Youth Orchestra is a wonderful opportunity for string players, ages 8 to 18 to rehearse and perform together at Tenth Presbyterian Church. Any interested students from Tenth Church as well as student players from the surrounding community are welcome to join. There is no charge for participation in this orchestra however regular attendance for rehearsals and performances is expected as much as is possible.

Performance opportunities include informal recitals and occasional opportunities to play for services at historic Tenth Presbyterian Church.

Overview

  • Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass players with good note reading ability at an intermediate to advanced level are encouraged to join.
  • Music chosen will accommodate the different levels of the participants, using standard classical repertoire and hymn arrangements as well as lighter styles.
  • Rehearsals will take place in Reception Hall at Tenth Presbyterian Church every Sunday from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, beginning Sunday, September 28. (Registration is required.)
