Proverbs 22:14

The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit;
    he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.

This is a warning to all men against sexual allure, temptation, and lust. Matthew Henry’s Commentary states, “As they regard the welfare of their souls, let them take heed of strange women, lewd women, whom they ought to be strange to, of the mouth of strange women, of the kisses of their lips, of the words of their lips, their charms and enticements. Dread them; have nothing to do with them.” James 1:14-15 warns similarly, “Each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

Such a warning should make us think. Do we want to live in a downward spiral that leads to death? Let us pray that when we are tempted—whatever the enticement—we will also have the means of grace to withstand it. When we cry out to the Lord for help, he will hear us, and help us.
