A Foundation of “By” Words

Series: Proverbs

by Carroll Wynne March 25, 2014 Scripture: Proverbs 24:3

Proverbs 24:3-4

By wisdom a house is built,
and by understanding it is established;
by knowledge the rooms are filled
with all precious and pleasant riches.

The wisdom books of the Bible (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon) provide wonderful “technical” help for home architects (cf. Ps. 127; Prov. 9:1; 14:1). Have you considered how your home will be constructed? Are there some renovations which you should consider?

So often we focus on the mundane, rather than the real foundation.  We carefully work the numbers on a mortgage, location, condition of the house/condo, arrangement of the kitchen, window treatments, furniture, and entertainment center, but don’t spend the time to consider the important matters – the foundational matters, if you will.  How will people thrive in this space and being together? What will be the hallmark of this home?

Our verses today hone in on this very theme, sharing what will build, establish and fill your home.  All are signaled with the word “by”: by wisdom, by understanding, and by knowledge. These are not commodities found in the pages of Country Homes, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, Traditional Homes or Veranda magazines. Nor will they be dependent upon your bank account and investments. In fact, they will never wear out, but rather increase (or decrease) in value and provide transfer investment worth.  In fact, properly assembled, they will beautify your life and the lives of those who perceive it.

Two places to begin: begin with wisdom (Prov. 1:7; 4:7) and then share a time of prayer with your Heavenly Father – architecture is one of his greatest skills…and he enjoys sharing his insights with all who seek time with him.
