Proverbs 28:1

The wicked flee when no one pursues,
but the righteous are bold as a lion.

The wicked lose strength and courage when the odds are stacked against them. They thrive when they can lie, cheat, ambush, and rely on greater numbers to fight and win their battles. Their confidence lies in what they see and experience. When they are alone or cannot see clearly, they fade and run away.

The righteous can be bold at all times because their strength rests in the Lord. David understood this and tested it. With this confidence, for instance, he faced and killed Goliath.

Where does your confidence lie? Is it in your ability to calculate the odds or is it in your faith in the one true God? Only with God will you find the kind of peace that weathers all the trials of life and fosters stability. Only with God will you find the wisdom to know what to do when faced with life’s doubts and questions. Many of our dilemmas are due not because of a lack of knowledge, but a lack of faith. When we trust the Lord as our stronghold and fortress, we will be free to focus on doing the right and honorable thing.
