Business Manager

The Business Manager is responsible for supporting the mission of the church through managing its business and finances. The position requires the ability to work with a variety of automated systems and the pastoral staff to ensure the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions. The incumbent will manage processes and also perform routine tasks as needed. The Business Manager reports to the Executive Minister. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

The Business Manager:

  1. Interfaces with our accounting firm (currently Baker Tilly) and ensures that all processes and documents that they require to close Tenth’s books are provided on a timely basis.
  2. Supervises and backs up staff and volunteers who perform financial processes of the church.
  3. Oversees the annual audit of Tenth by a public accounting firm (currently Tait Weller).
  4. Approves invoices for payment. This function includes verifying proper account coding and compliance to policy. May also submit invoices as necessary.
  5. Oversees and participates in the processing and reconciliation of donations.
  6. Oversees and backs up the payroll function.
  7. Ensures all employee expense reports are received on a timely basis, are properly coded, and comply with policy. Provides a preliminary approval for each expense report and forwards them to the Executive pastor for final approval.
  8. Serves as primary contact for vendors and interacts with ministry leaders in the organization to ensure other work has been completed satisfactorily.
  9. Transfers funds as necessary to maintain sufficient operating balances in the church’s primary accounts.
  10. Recommends short term investments in treasury bills and purchases them based on the approval of the Executive pastor.
  11. Is the resident expert on all Tenth financial policies and ensures they are up-to-date and easily accessible to all staff. Provides guidance to the staff and recommending changes as necessary.
  12. Maintains an up-to-date working knowledge of our financial and membership systems (Sage Intacct, Nexonia, TouchPoint).
  13. Assists pastoral staff as needed with managing expenses and tracking actual to budget variances.
  14. Serves as a signer on church accounts.
  15. Ensures automated financial reports (via Sage Intacct) are current and received by department heads on a monthly basis in order to maintain compliance with budgeted spending limits.
  16. Prepares a comprehensive quarterly financial package for review by the Executive Pastor and Trustees.
  17. Manages the annual budget process.
  18. Ensures annual donor statements are accurate and available (or mailed) on a timely basis.
  19. Recruits and oversees volunteers from the congregation to perform routine financial tasks such as processing donations or mailing annual donor statements.
  20. Contacts donors as necessary to resolve issues related to insufficient funds or lack of compliance to giving policy.
  21. Works closely with the Finance Committee in order to assess the financial condition of the church and to develop and implement policies and procedures which will result in optimal stewardship of the church’s resources.
  22. Attends Finance Committee and staff meetings.
  23. Is able to assess the effectiveness of our financial systems and recommend updates as necessary. Specifically, our payroll processes need to be reviewed for increased automation.
  24. General business administration
  25. Reviews vendor contracts for services prior to approval.
  26. Procures and serves as primary liaison for business services contracted by the church, including accounting, insurance, legal services, and utilities.
  27. Oversee property and wage tax obligations.
  28. Manages the church’s business credit card account.
  29. Ensure the church maintains timely payments for city taxes and is in compliance with local ordinances.
  30. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, budgeting, and payroll administration
  • Familiarity with financial systems such as Sage Intacct and Nexonia preferred
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a faith-based environment

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in business or related field; or equivalent experience

Experience:

Proven experience in financial or business management, preferably in a nonprofit or church setting

Skills:

  • Sage Intacct (accounting)
  • Nexonia (expense reporting)
  • TouchPoint (church management system)
