Summer Medical Institute Zoom Info Meeting

SMI Philly Info Meeting
Sunday, January 11, 2026
7PM (EST) on Zoom
Interested in a hands-on medical ministry program and an opportunity for spiritual growth this summer? The Philadelphia Summer Medical Institute is a 3-week urban immersion program where Christian healthcare students learn firsthand about community healthcare, to appropriately integrate faith with career, and to center their identities in Christ during their busy academic years. Healthcare students will live and work in densely-populated Hispanic North Philadelphia, providing door-to-door health screens and sharing Christ’s love through conversation and prayer. Program partner Esperanza Health Center and local churches provide clinical referrals and spiritual follow up. Students receive training on relevant topics throughout and will have an opportunity to shadow at Esperanza. Dates for this year are June 20 – July 11.

On Sunday, January 11, we will host an information meeting on Zoom for all those interested in learning more about SMI Philly. This is for any rising junior and up healthcare or pre-healthcare students, or any medical professionals interested in proctoring the students for 1-2 days (or more!) this summer. Email [email protected] to get the registration/Zoom link.

Free Book Event with Nigel M. de S. Cameron

Professor Nigel M. de S. Cameron has authored Dr. Koop: The Many Lives of the Surgeon General., a biography on Dr. C. Everett Koop, a former Surgeon General of the U.S., also a member and ruling elder at Tenth (see memorial plaque on the Spruce Street wall of the sanctuary) and a pioneering pediatric surgeon at CHOP. The book has chapters on many aspects of his life, including Tenth Presbyterian Church and his medical and governmental careers. The Koops came to a life-changing faith at Tenth. Ministers Dr. Barnhouse and Dr. Boice and their wives, Tenth members Dr. Louise Schnaufer and RN Erna Goulding (close friends and colleagues at CHOP), and former Tenth pastoral staff member Cora Hogue Koop (Koop’s second wife), are all very present in the book.

Cameron has been invited to give a lecture at the College of Physicians about his biography of Dr. C. Everett Koop on October 16, 6 pm. Copies of the book will be available at the event, and he will be happy to sign them. The Department of Surgery at CHOP is co-sponsoring the evening.

The link to register is below. There will be a reception with refreshments. The lecture is open to the public, and there is no charge.
