Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to Him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all His work is done in faithfulness. Psalm 33:1-4 ESV

Music & Worship

Scripture declares, and we believe, that music in the context of worship is to be thoughtful, excellent, and God-honoring. Our goal is for these qualities to infuse all musical activity in the church with the ultimate purpose of bringing glory to God. With God himself as both Subject and object, worship music serves the roles of praise, prayer, and proclamation.

Music in Tenth worship services should reflect God’s glory, facilitate his worship by his people, and encourage the body of Christ. Our musical worship is traditional but varied in both time-period and genre, and includes hymnody, psalmody, spirituals, and a wide range of vocal and instrumental music.

Music Ministry & You

Everyone has been gifted by God with some measure of musical ability, and the Bible commands us to sing. With that in mind, there are many opportunities for people of all ages to be involved in music-making at Tenth Church, whether in vocal or instrumental ensembles, as specially-skilled soloists, or as members of that largest and most significant of our choral groups—the congregation.

Music plays some part in almost every ministry of the church: from children’s, youth and adult education, to outreach efforts both local and global, to mercy ministry to the homeless and nursing home residents. Tenth Concert Series offers an array of programs to the Philadelphia public and church members that include recitals, hymn festivals, and large-scale choral and orchestral concerts. Tenth staff members have been involved in hymn writing as well as other forms of musical composition.

We trust that you will become involved in Tenth’s music ministry as a singing worshiper, as an engaged listener, and perhaps even as an active ensemble participant.
