“The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and even soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.” So reads the opening paragraph of Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863, the origin of Thanksgiving Day as we know it today. Lincoln goes on to “invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” The Scriptures time and again commend the giving of thanks, even as a testimony of God’s goodness to the watching world: “I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations” (Psalm 108:3). It is fitting in this context that the Church of Jesus Christ take the lead in directing people in the proper worship of the Triune God.

For this reason and others, Tenth Presbyterian Church has for many years held a Thanksgiving Day worship service. Please join us as we gather to give thanks and praise to our great God and Savior in prayer, hymns, offerings, and the reading and preaching of His Word. Dr. Liam Goligher will bring the morning sermon. Special music will be provided by guest singer Todd Thomas.
