City School Acquires Poplar Campus

by November 22, 2017

Fall of 2018 will be an exciting time for students in Philadelphia. After many years of prayers and anticipation for a new home for its students, The City School recently acquired a former charter school site at 910 N. 6th Street in the Poplar/Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. For forty years The City School has been focused on training students’ minds, discipling their hearts, and bringing light to the city—one child at a time.

Having boldly pursued growth and innovation to see children flourishing in the city, this new Poplar upper school campus will build upon the success of The City School’s current campuses at Fairmount (elementary), Spruce Hill (elementary), Walnut Street (middle school), and Rittenhouse (high school).

Founded in part by former Tenth pastor Dr. James Boice and his wife Linda, The City School has a rich 35-year partnership with Tenth Church. This new campus hopefully will present an even greater opportunity to strengthen these ties. The new Poplar campus will allow the Walnut Street and Rittenhouse campuses, currently at the University City Chinese Christian Church and Tenth Presbyterian Church respectively, to consolidate on one centrally-located upper school campus.

The new Poplar campus will present the opportunity to double upper school enrollment to over 320 students within five years. This enrollment growth will set the stage for a plethora of opportunities, including a competition-size gymnasium, a retractable stage, outdoor recreation space, and double the classroom capacity of the school’s current Walnut Street and Rittenhouse facilities. It will have the space to allow separate rooms for middle school and high school programming as well as combined spaces like a cafeteria, labs, and art spaces in order to foster community between the students.

The school community has already started using the campus this current school year. Already it has hosted basketball games and practices, professional development for our teachers, volunteer service for our students, and other school community events. Being able to walk into a space that, while continuing to require modest upcoming renovations, was in good enough shape to start using right away was a huge blessing. With the move to Poplar, The City School will be able to serve in a new neighborhood with proximity to the Market-Frankford and Broad Street subway lines as well as multiple bus and trolley routes to support access to this thriving school community from across the Philadelphia region.

Who you learn with matters. Consider joining this dynamic, growing school community as a new student or as a committed financial or community partner. Already with a clear focus on nurturing the whole child with stellar academic success, the next steps at The City School are truly inspiring. Imagine investing in a school community committed to honoring Jesus in the city through excellent and accessible education—a place where children flourish.

How can you be involved? What else can God do through our united ministry ties?
