An Independence Day and a Dependant and Liberated Life

Today is Independence Day. Independence Day is the day that Americans celebrate their declared independence from the alleged tyrannical rule of King George III of England. Not a bad thing to celebrate.

Yet, for the Christian every day is first of all Dependence Day. “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1) Christians recognize their utter and absolute dependence upon the LORD for every material blessing. Also, for the Christian every day is a “Liberation From Tyranny day.” “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

Political freedom is a great temporal blessing, but freedom from the curse of the law, freedom from fear of punishment, freedom to worship God in spirit and in truth; these are freedoms of eternal significance. There are no greater freedoms than these. Enjoy the Holiday, but do not neglect to praise the Lord each Holy Day, and every day, for the eternal blessings of freedom and dependence that he daily gives to his people.
