Comfort Dennis Orphanage

Liberia is one of the four poorest countries in the world. The World Bank lists the per capita income at $541/year, but the love that Christians have shown there has inspired us at Tenth. Since 2001, we have partnered with them in the support of orphans.

During the Liberian Civil War, Anthony and Comfort Dennis opened their home to an orphan named Blessing and brought her to live with them and their four children. One by one they added orphaned or abandoned children and soon their home was an orphanage housing sixty-six children and requiring a support staff of a dozen. They have dedicated their lives to nurturing and loving these children in the name of Jesus. In late October 2012, we received word that Anthony Dennis had died. Comfort continues to care for the children.

The Mother Comfort Dennis Orphanage is located in New Georgia, in the northwest section of Monrovia, Liberia. One main building (six average size rooms) is home to the orphans and the Dennis family. A well, an outhouse, and a small garden area on the edge of a swamp complete the property. Nearby they have also recently built a house out of mud blocks in which some of the high school boys and recent graduates live. Another foundation has been building an additional building for dorms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a library.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis also started a K-6 Christian school nearby that includes children from the New Georgia community.  Now almost 400 children are attending the school.  Those attending high school are in the best schools in the city. Nine children from the home now attend trade school at Booker Washington Institute. Funds are needed to continue the education of these children and young adults.

Through donations, New Hope Liberia has provided has provided orphans with food, school fees, school uniforms, text books, school supplies, medical care, maintenance of the water well, sewing machines and materials, bunk beds and mattresses, clothing, dishes and flatware, pots, charcoal stove, generator, and various other daily necessities.
