We pause to give thanks to God and to remember His servant, John Evans, who died on June 29.

John Evans was born July 22, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of  the late John Duncan Evans, Jr. and the late Ida Virginia Evans.   He attended Shady Side Academy, St. Paul's School, Harvard, Oxford, Pittsburgh Seminary, and Drexel University. Though he was from a family of privilege, after his rebirth during his college years, he chose to follow his Lord and Master Jesus and live a life of service.

John served as pastor of an inner city Philadelphia church with two congregations (Spanish and English) and a church in Central Pennsylvania where his two children were born. After serving as teacher and librarian at Manna Bible Institute in Philadelphia, John later organized a resource center, Kairos, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.   He was involved in the Men's movement Promise Keepers, supported missions and served as coordinator of church volunteers doing community service work in Juarez, Mexico. Upon retirement, he served as Pastoral Associate for Mission to the World and taught a weekly Bible study in Spanish for inmates at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia.

In addition to his wife Vernelle (Nell) of 46 years, he is survived by his daughter, Faith Evans-Sills (Francis) of Mount Pleasant, SC;  son, Dr. John Paul Evans (Louisa) of Marlow, England; sister, Margaret Evans Tuten; brother, David Courtney Evans; six grandchildren: Jasper, Carys, and Griffin Sills and Beatrix, Freya, and Jensen Evans, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
