Amnesia and Distractions

Series: Proverbs

by Bruce Garver July 30, 2014 Scripture: Proverbs 28:10

Proverbs 28:10

Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit,
but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance.

In Deuteronomy 6 and 7—and throughout the Old Testament—Israel is warned not to turn aside and go after other gods. Israel suffered from amnesia and distractions. We like Israel suffer from amnesia and distractions. Jason Bourne suffered from amnesia and struggled to remember who he was in the midst of distractions, viz. people trying to kill him.

Proverbs 28:10 warns us that there are people who are out to get us, but encourages us that they will fall into their own trap. The ones who seek our destruction will themselves be destroyed.

Matthew Henry refers here to the doom of the seducers and the happiness of the sincere.

They shall not only be preserved from the evil way which the wicked would decoy them into, but they shall have good things, the best things, in possession, the graces and comforts of God’s Spirit, besides what they have in reversion.

Where is our preservation and our goodly inheritance? Turn your eyes upon Jesus and the things of this earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.

In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. —Ephesians 1:11–12

Today, remember who you are and what you have. Don’t be turned aside to that which will not satisfy. Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
